Welcome to New Revised Satirical Version, the Bible-based gift shop!
Ever see a mug, t-shirt, bumper sticker—or even hear a sermon—that makes you want to yell, “That’s not what that means! You’re missing the greater context!”
Our designs are intended to poke fun at misinterpretations and out-of-context Bible quotes in an extreme way to get people to go “wait...is that really in there?” If you are a Bible nerd, a pun-lover, or just a curious Christian who enjoys clever twists on a well-known verse or a reminder of scripture you may have missed in Sunday school, you’re in the right place.
“Does this verse mean what I think it means?”
Well that depends...did you read and understand the whole Bible and how the verse fits within the greater context?
Whenever someone says “the Bible says this…” —are they taking something out of context?
We’re passionate about nudging people toward actually reading and understanding their Bibles. And reminding people that the Bible is not just a pretty little quote for your Instagram account. It’s a deeply meaningful look into who God is. Every time we read through it we see something new and the constant seeking of the truth transforms our minds, our faith, and our lives.
In Paul’s letter to the Galatians, he calls out false teachers in the church that were distorting the gospel from a message of salvation by grace through faith into a legalist, works-based religion. This is a completely different gospel from the one that they had started with:
“I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!” -Galatians 1:6-9 (NIV)
At New Revised Satirical Version, we believe that a good laugh can lead to good theology. So if our shirts make you smile (and then make you look up the verse), we’re doing our job to help Spread the Word.
